CleanTech &  Environmental: Emerging Markets Part 1

Our research has highlighted a number of emerging opportunities and markets for different environmental applications; with new opportunities in emerging markets, let us look at China and Gulf States in Part 1.

We had interviewed a number of CleanTech /Environmental professionals in emerging markets last month as well as meeting with the Government policymakers to find out what their “priorities” are in terms of cleantech / environmental tasks.

China (National and Health Issues)

• Health issue instead of environmental issue

Water pollution and air pollution are 2 areas that have impacted Chinese health system significantly. Millions of Chinese people have died from diseases related to air pollution and water pollution. In some northern regions, the life expectancy has fallen due to the severe pollution. China has thus far, unable to resolve these problems effectively and have been investing in new technologies that can be applied to alleviate pollution problems.

• Replacing oil & gas, go for renewable energies (National Interest)

This is actually coming from National Interest, China has a long term strategic policy in reducing its reliance from oil imports, and this has pushed the developments into investments into alternative energy and waste-energy conversion technologies.

• Cheap energy for the rural areas:

One particular social problem China is facing is the gap between city and the rural areas. Due to the urbanization and industrial growth in the rural areas, power shortage is becoming a major issue in the rural areas. This has created new opportunities for companies capable in providing alternative energy at cheap cost, at moment, solar energy and wind energy are highly considered by the regional governments.

The Gulf States (It’s all about water)

We has also undertaken research in a number of Gulf States including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Oman and UAE, their priorities are very different from other emerging economies.

In Middle East, because of the long standing tensions and scarcity of water, their demands are more from political needs instead of environmental needs.

• Securing sustainable water supply: Water has been the main factor behind much of the tensions in this region.
As the result, all governments in this region are looking for alternative ways to secure water supply, this include desalination, recycled water, also preserve soil.

• Protection of agricultural industry (food supply): As a strategic policy, many nations in the Gulf States have self-reliant food supply strategic goals to ensure food supply is not disrupted in an event of a war.

Soil preservation is now becoming a major investment opportunity in this region, technologies such as artificial soil, water management (for agricultural usage), environmental conservation projects can all attract potential investments from investors in this region.
